WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORMAL AND HI-DEF VIDEO?

Normal video is useful for adding a visual element to a presentation, seminar, or collaborative meeting. Normal video allows a user to run up to four webcams simultaneously in the Participants Window while other services are run in the Workspace area.

HiDef video provides a higher quality stream and dimensions at a lower bandwidth, making it ideally suited for a true face-to-face video conference. In a HiDef video session, a user's webcam preview will appear in the Participant Window while stream from up to 4 other meeting participants can appear in the Workspace are.

MY PARTICIPANTS SAY THEY HAVE A RAINBOW EFFECT AND THEIR DISPLAY IS PIXELLED.  WHAT CAN I DO?

Start a meeting, click on Meeting Options, select Options

Within the Options dialog box, click on the ScreenSharing tab, set the screen sharing quality to Better and click OK.  By default the quality is set to Good for speed optimization.  However, we strongly discourage setting the quality to Best as it will use more bandwith and deliver a slower stream.

These setting will stay in place until your next IMC software upgrade.  With each upgrade, repeat the steps above.

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU RECOMMEND TO USE WITH VIDEO CONFERENCING?

At the very least a camera capable of 320x240 at 15 frames per second is desirable. Also the interface from camera to the pc is an important consideration. This decides what is the rate at which the camera can transfer bytes to pc. USB 1.0 is good for 320x240 at 15fps. USB 2.0 is better. Another of interface which are suitable for hi-def are Firewire IEEE 1364 (this is commonly used by DV cameras).

Top

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR VIDEO CONFERENCING?

PC should have a minimum requirement of 1 Ghz processor and 256 MB RAM and a 16 bit color display adapter. Better quality graphics cards are an important criteria. Graphics cards with AGP interface and inbuilt memory of 2MB or higher is preferable. This would enable a better frame rate while displaying video.

Top

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM INTERNET REQUIREMENTS FOR VIDEO CONFERENCING?

For the normal video conferencing with 10 frames per second or lesser a bandwidth of 128 kbps uplink and downlink is required. Most of the standard Cable connections have a very high downlink speed (eg 2Mbps) but the uplink is low (of the order of 128 kbps to 512 kbps) depending on the price you pay. The DSL on the other hand can have uplink speeds from 900kbps upto 1.5Mbps (SDSL). T1 which a typical small business uses has 1.5 Mbps uplink and 1.5 Mbps downlink.

Hi-def video conferencing requires 256 kbps to 700 kbps depending on profile and frame rate the user chooses.

* All these numbers make sense only if that bandwidth is not shared at the time of Video conferencing.

Top

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF USERS YOU WOULD RECOMMEND FOR MULTI USER VIDEO CONFERENCING?

Multi user video conferencing increases the download speed requirement stated above by a factor of N where N is the number of users in the conference. For eg. If a one on one conference would require 128 kbps, a 10 person video conference with all 10 transmit and receive would require 1.2 Mbps downlink and 128 kbps uplink.

Top

WHAT AFFECT DO PROXIES AND FIREWALLS HAVE ON VIDEO CONFERENCING?

Proxies and firewall might degrade the performance of the video conferencing if the traffic is tunneled via HTTP. The software tries to choose the best possible mode of transport automatically. In the event where it cannot connect direct to our servers via persistent TCP connection, the traffic is tunneled ( video traffic now will be encapsulated in HTTP protocol and will look like web traffic ). This will degrade the end user experience.
